Early Detection of Childhood Disability Center

Definition:

A specialized center of secondary level dealing with disabled children aged one day -15 years for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation by different new and recent techniques and diagnostics tools.

Introduction:

Since 1/33 - 1/50 babies are delivered with congenital anomalies that may lead to disability in the future and disability is third disorder in pediatrics population after infectious diseases and injuries, taking care of disabled children is a human - child rights, because early diagnosis and intervention will give better prognosis in the future, may wars in our locality, economic and social problems, increasing cases of road traffic accident, making database center for future planing, some pediatrics disorder need multidisciplinary team for their treatment , so that this center was established by ACORN. Netherlands organization as unit in Azadi hospital in 1998 and the same organization established new building supported by Directed General of Health Duhok governorate, and UNICEF in 21/8/2008.

The center consists of six departments:

1. Administration department:

• To organize the work between the center and the department of health
• To organize and support the other departments of the center.
• Statistical issues
• Repair and maintenance of the different center instruments
• Salary issues

2. Physician department:

For full history inquiring examination, investigate the patients accordingly, consulting other physician accordingly, and prescribing medication, orthopedicians , diagnosis and treatment of childhood orthopedic problems whether by physiotherapy, splinting, casting, or surgical intervention. Ophthalmologist, for early diagnosis of eyes problems, also a general practitioner is present.

3. Reception department:

Organize and coding each files according their geographical distribution and center of referral (form primary health center ), making schedules for according to physician or physiotherapist opinion idea.

4) Physiotherapy department:

The cornerstone of the center, with good and update technique in pediatrics Physiotherapy and rehabilitation. There are special instruments which help in their job such as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, hydrotherapy, brain, etc.

6) Pharmacy department:

For further evaluation and assessment, many patients are referred to Hevi pediatric hospital or to Azadi teaching general hospital such for C-T scan, MRI, U/S scanning , echocardiography evaluation or to audio logical assessment, urological evaluation, neurosurgical consulation or they are sending to Duhok laboratories center for further blood or urinary analysis such as for (CBP , LFT, TFT, BUN , FBS , Hormonal assay, etc). For the public health purposes the center conducted seminars, leaflets, posters and training courses for the physician and/or paramedics yearly.
